The GI Bill has expanded! With larger benefits, transferability to family members and a stipend for books and living expenses — there are no more excuses to put off earning your college degree.
Online schools have rushed to fill the needs of the military community, offering specific online military degree programs and accelerated degree programs for military members and their families. These programs have been built from the ground up to fill the unique educational needs of the military community.
Traditional, non-portable degree programs often have rigid rules that do not take the unique experiences of service members and their families into account. The growth of the Internet and online education has changed that. No longer does the predictable and frequent PCS schedule and deployment tempo mean a service member or military dependent has to spend large amounts of money and time making up credits that don’t transfer or abandon their degree altogether.
Accredited online universities have developed military programs that can travel with military members anywhere they go. Programs are flexible and can be completed at times most convenient for the student. Military members who perform TDY and long-duty days no longer have to miss classes that lower grades and wreak havoc on school schedules.
Online degree programs have structured their programs to benefit military members in other ways, too. Many schools have taken into account the unique nature of the military and military training, and they offer accelerated degree programs for military students. These accelerated programs make use of exams, such as DANTES and CLEP, which allow students to “test out” of subjects and receive credit hours for the knowledge they gained through their military service.
Many online programs work closely with the Department of Defense and individual military bases through Base Education Offices. DANTES and CLEP tests are given on base at regularly scheduled times, and results can be sent directly to colleges.
Don’t forget the new GI Bill and other military education benefits! Online degree programs and universities have counselors ready to work with service members and their families to make the most of their educational benefits and opportunities.
With all the military-specific online college programs available to service members today, getting a degree is no longer out of reach.
