Desktop support involves providing technical support to users of desktop computers, applications and all its related technology. This means the desktop support technician is a customer service specialist in charge of interacting with clients to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of computer systems and peripherals within the boundaries of an established set of guidelines.

The job entails knowledge of application software and operating systems to diagnose and resolve problems. In fact, the desktop support technician is often seen as the “guru” who has the answer to any computer problem.

To enter this field, a bachelor’s degree is typically required for some desktop support specialist positions, but an associate degree or certification is sufficient for other positions. The position requires independent analysis, communication and problem solving.

Desktop Support Job Description

The desktop support technician’s duties include everything related to the support and maintenance of an organization’s desktop computers and its related technology. The daily tasks include:

  • Installing, configuring and maintaining desktop computers, peripheral equipment and software
  • Working with vendors to resolve technical problems with hardware and software
  • Working with the help desk and information technology (IT) staff to determine and resolve problems received from clients
  • Ensuring desktop computers interconnect seamlessly with all the systems including file servers, email servers, computer conferencing systems, application servers and administrative systems
  • Training staff on the usage of hardware and software
  • Recommending upgrades on systems
  • Assisting in maintaining LAN/WAN records and, as appropriate, telephone systems cable

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, a desktop support specialist could earn an annual salary of up to $72,690.

Employment in this field is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations. And jobs prospects are good, especially for those with a bachelor’s degree and relevant experience.
