Database architects are the designers of computer networks. They are responsible for designing, implementing and operating database systems that support critical corporate systems.

Database Architect Degrees

A database architect is a senior position, and will require several years of related experience. In addition, certifications from database platforms such as Oracle, IBM DB2 and Microsoft SQL Server are often necessary. You can start on the path toward a database architect career by getting a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as computer science or information systems, maybe even a master’s degree down the road. The master’s degree will be quite helpful, especially if it has a concentration in management information systems (MIS) or computer science.

Database Architect Job Description

Database architects are the technologists who design, set up, test, and evaluate an organization’s databases and data storage systems, often including its intranet, and other data communications systems. Their jobs may also include:

• Designing a database structure to support business objectives
• Setting the strategy and standards for the organization’s database systems
• Reviewing and recommending hardware and software components of the database system
• Addressing information security issues

Database Architect Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual wages of database administrators were $71,100 in May 2008. The middle 50 percent earned between $54,330 and $90,740. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $41,660, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $110,920.
