A database programmer typically begins with a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information science with a concentration in database programming. There are also a number of associate degrees available which can prepare one for an entry-level position.

Database Programmer Job Description

Database programmers write programs. After a database architect designs the structure of the organization’s systems, the programmer then implements that design, turning it into actual code. The database programmer uses any number of programming languages, depending on the need, with the most common being C++ and Python.

Database programmers may also do some of the following:

• Database design and scripting
• Programming in C, C++, C#, or Java
• Updating and repairing existing programs
• Using computer-assisted software engineering (CASE) tools to automate much of the coding process
• Using libraries of basic code that can be modified or customized for a specific application.

Database Programmer Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median annual wages of database programmers were $70,940 in May 2009. The middle 50 percent earned between $53,620 and $91,000. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $40,640, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $113,380.
