Desktop support involves providing technical support to users of desktop computers, applications and all its related technology. This means the desktop support technician is a customer service specialist in charge of interacting with clients to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of computer systems and peripherals within the boundaries of an established set of guidelines.

The job entails knowledge of application software and operating systems to diagnose and resolve problems. In fact, the desktop support technician is often seen as the “guru” who has the answer to any computer problem.

To enter this field, a bachelor’s degree is typically required for some desktop support specialist positions, but an associate degree or certification is sufficient for other positions. The position requires independent analysis, communication and problem solving.
